Wednesday, May 22: Augmented reality at the University of Osaka

As a brief interlude to our work at Nara Institute of Science and Technology, we visited Osaka University to see the lab of Daisuke Iwai, an associate professor in the Graduate School of Engineering Science. Their lab conducts research on topics such as advanced projection techniques and 'body cyberization,' which involves extending or replacing the physical human body with virtual capabilities.

After a brief lecture explaining their active research, we were guided to a lab where we were shown live demos and allowed to experiment with them. The two main setups were an array of projectors creating an image on a table that could not be occluded from any angle, and the 'extended reality' arm, which was projected onto a longer table and controlled via a tablet.

As a bonus, we also had the opportunity to see a graduate student's project, a huggable robot.

The evening was dedicated to sightseeing in Osaka, namely visiting the famous Dotonbori. Everybody went their separate ways to explore one of the most famous areas of Osaka.
