Saturday, May 14: Arrival and pizza

We made our way from Reykjavík to Zürich to Winterthur mostly without incident until we discovered that the hostel didn't open until 90 minutes after we got there. Luckily, we were able to check in a bit early and had a very nice pizza dinner as a group afterward.

We arrived in Iceland at 6:30 a.m. for a 7:20 a.m. connection to Zürich. Luckily, passport control at Keflavík airport is very efficient and we all made it to Zürich without incident. Wolfgang Kickmaier from ZHAW (as I learned later, the locals pronounce this like "tset-ah-vay") met us at the airport and we took a train to Winterthur, our base for the trip.

Unfortunately, we arrived at the hostel at 2:30 p.m. only to discover that check-in started at 4 p.m. Wolfgang generously bought us all snacks and the receptionist let us check in early after 45 minutes. After everyone got settled, we met up with Wolfgang again for a walk around the Altstadt (old town) and a pizza dinner.

The restaurant had lots of interesting pizza options including a vegan pizza with chickpeas, which I ordered.

After dinner, the group split up. A few went back to the hostel to play Frisbee, while the rest of us explored the town a bit more and sampled local specialties. Most of us were asleep pretty early, exhausted after a long day.
