On Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24, we got to see demos from the Interactive Media Design (IMD) and Cybernetics and Reality Engineering (CARE) labs.

Highlights from the IMD demos include a magic book (a scanner that scans an image and shows you a 3D model or picture that can rotate as the image in reality does), an artificial intelligence that can play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate against a human player, a robot kiwi (the bird), and a virtual reality (VR) concert for comfort in a self-driving car.

Highlights from the CARE demos include a prototype bed that uses skin tension to simulate pressure on the back, potentially allowing the sensation of standing up in VR while lying down, a new haptic controller that can simulate weight and the softness of materials, and a controller that can enable users to feel as though they’re gripping objects of different shapes and materials in VR by reconfiguring itself.

On the second day of the ideathon, we had dinner with students and faculty at the Yamato Saidaiji Branch, a traditional izakaya. We had a lot of fun, and the food was quite good as well. Thanks to our hosts at  the Nara Institute of Science and Technology for a great experience!
