Wednesday, May 18: Campus, Winterthur, 'life'

The ZHAW Winterthur campus extends throughout the city, from the Technikum and new applied science building near the old part of the city, northeast of the hostel, to the library and other academic buildings surrounding the hostel itself. However, it is still very easy to get to the classes, as all the classes are either in the new applied sciences building or in the Technikum.

While they are slightly further than the buildings right by the hostel, it is still only a 10- 15-minute walk to the applied sciences building (with the robotics lab with robot arms) and an additional five-minute walk to the Technikum (which is where Wolfgang’s office is). Overall, the campus and classrooms are very well designed, with the exception being no air conditioning, which was surprising considering the robotics likely function best at a specific temperature and humidity that I’d have thought would be controlled.

The quality of life in Winterthur appears to be excellent, with the transit, roads, buildings, and parks being very clean, safe, and organized. The kiosks were slightly difficult to get used to in the train stations, even with them being in English as an option, but after a few tries they began to make sense.

The hiking and walking trails throughout and around Winterthur have been great for after class and weekend trips, with the broadcast tower and viewing tower both being beautiful walks with amazing views at the top.

In addition, there are areas for soccer, running, and biking if renting a bike is an option. And even right next to the hostel there is a nice area called the Rosengarten, with a vast array of different flowers, all labeled, to relax by.
