Saturday, May 25: Clock tower, bears, and boat tours!

We started off the day strong with breakfast at the hostel in Bern! They offered a wide variety of options, including some fun ombre eggs. After packing up our belongings, we walked up a steep ramp to the Zytglogge clock tower.

We started off the day strong with breakfast at the hostel in Bern! They offered a wide variety of options, including some fun ombre eggs. After packing up our belongings, we walked up a steep ramp to the Zytglogge clock tower.

The clock, built in 1220, has undergone numerous changes over time. Originally serving as the entrance to the city and a watchtower, it was later expanded and utilized as a women’s prison. At one point, it also functioned as a fire watchtower. Eventually, the outpost was transformed into a clock tower.

We got to see all of the different mechanisms that made the clock tower function, including how it controls the various aspects of the tower. As engineers, we were all really interested in how it ticked.

We then walked around Bern and saw a cute little market, where we had some fantastic bread. We also found a spot with a beautiful view.

We kept walking and got to see some bears!

Next, we got back onto the bus and made our way to Thun. The bus ride was beautiful, and once we arrived at our destination, we had lunch before embarking on a boat tour!

We then reached our destination, hiked up a steep hill, and settled into the new hostel in Grindelwald. We enjoyed an amazing view!

As you can see, we settled in pretty quickly to our rooms.

For dinner, we all got to try something new, a cheese fondue dinner! It was delicious.

The evening consisted of fire-building, hanging out in the hot pot (hot tub), and stargazing!
