Free Day in Vik

Today was the free day in Vikøyri, Norway. It is a small town with few people, but many great hiking trails. Most of the group decided to try our luck hiking to the top of the mountains that surround the town. I left with a small group of people, determined to challenge ourselves and see the sights.
Today was the free day in Vikøyri, Norway. It is a small town with few people, but many great hiking trails. Most of the group decided to try our luck hiking to the top of the mountains that surround the town. I left with a small group of people, determined to challenge ourselves and see the sights.

After a bit of searching, we locate the trail head. The path takes us through sheep pastures, fields, and forests. The terrain is varied, it is sometimes rocky, muddy and pastoral, but it is always steep. We climb higher and higher and higher. Then we reach a clearing.

The view is spectacular! From this altitude we can see the entire valley below. We decide to continue on the trail to higher elevations for the promise of a more incredible view. We hike on gravel, dirt, mud, and grass upward and upward.

At a clearing of the trees, we stop to get a picture with the hills and water in the background. We continue on a while before turning back, hiking in total 11 miles.

After our hike we decide to go to the beach and swim in the cool water. The beach is sandy and has a platform from which we can jump into the water. It is a public beach and it is crowded with Norwegians enjoying their weekend. It had been a great day where we got to see the beautiful scenery, explore nature, and play at the beach.
