First day with ESG

We continue learning and working with Environment Support Group (ESG) by touring a lake and an apartment complex in Bangalore to discuss development issues.

After lunch, we began our first day with ESG. They are an organization that helps to address environmental and social justice issues in India. We began by observing one of the many lakes that made Bangalore famous. In the early 1900s, these lakes helped to provide the community with a water source, but now many lakes are being littered in. ESG is trying to clean the lake and make it into the commons.

We then walked through some newly developed apartments that weren't built for proper living. Their cement was made with a large amount of ash and the walls were too thin to properly support the weight from above. The residents that live here know it is unsafe, but it is the only place they can afford and therefore decide to stay.

This time helped to show some concerns that India has with waste control and civilian safety, and how ESG is planning to help.
