Today's site visit focus was the effect wind, sand, and water has on Denmark's environment and people. We started the day by heading to the most northern point of Denmark, just north of Skagen. We waked along the beach and felt the strong winds coming in from the ocean. We then returned to Skagen to eat lunch and spend some time in the shops there. Many of us ate at some of the local fish restaurants.
We then headed out to see what was left of a church that had been covered by sand. Since the winds are so strong in Denmark, it can cause sand to blow from the ocean inland. While the dunes typically move slow, it an be quite destructive over time. The next stop was at an active dune that has been moving about 13-17 meters each year. We climbed to the top and saw the wind blowing the sand from one side to another.
The final stop was at the coast where landslide occur on a regular basis. We saw the remains of a church that was moved to prevent it from falling into the ocean.
After this visit we bussed back towards Aalborg. On our way back, we dropped Bo off at the airport, as today was his last day with our group. We were sad to see him go, as we learned a lot from him while having a lot of fun.
Tomorrow morning we will be leaving the hotel to take a boat to Norway. We hope the sea won't be too rough!
