Ancient and Modern Structures in Italy

May 18 -June 7, 2010. The purpose of this class is to explore the development of structures and building materials in Italy from Roman times to the present. Fundamentals of material behavior, structural mechanics, and design methods will be presented by the instructors and guest lecturers from Italian universities.

Seminar Description
The purpose of this class is to explore the development of structures and building materials in Italy from Roman times to the present. Fundamentals of material behavior, structural mechanics, and design methods will be presented by the instructors and guest lecturers from Italian universities. Under the guidance of local engineers and faculty, numerous ancient and modern sites will be visited to highlight innovations in construction materials, form, and monitoring.

Travel across Northern Itality will be highlighted by stays in Rome, Florence, Milan, and Venice; participants also will see Verona, Pisa, and the Cinque Terre. The influence of culture, art, and security on the technological developments will be emphasized. Participants will also see the Dolomite mountains. See itinerary (coming soon)>>
