Saturday, Jan. 19: Merida's Roman bridge

The Roman Bridge in Mérida has been in use for over 2000 years. We walked the bridge three different times and learned several things about it including how it was constructed, it’s dimensions, and which parts are original.
The Roman Bridge in Mérida has been in use for over 2000 years. We walked the bridge three different times and learned several things about it including how it was constructed, it’s dimensions, and which parts are original.

Constructed around 2 B.C., the bridge has 60 arches and is nearly half a mile long. The top of the bridge has been redone with newer paving but you can still see some of the original stones between the main road and the sidewalk.

While walking along the bridge, it was possible to imagine what it may have felt like to walk into Roman Mérida. Such an impressive structure has lasted an amazingly long time and truly demonstrates the skill of Roman engineers.
