A big day in Dar Es Salaam

After a long day of traveling and our first night stay in Dar Es Salaam, we spent our first day in the city visiting Davis & Shirtliff, a supplier of pumps, solar collectors, controllers, and engineering modeling software.

After our tour of their facility, we proceeded to the wood carving market where we saw local craftsman carving ebony wood into souvenirs and figurines. We ended the day with a wonderful dinner on the shore of the Indian Ocean.

Tomorrow morning we depart Dar Es Salaam for Iringa, a nine-hour journey across south central Tanzania.

Other exciting moments from the day included several students' attempt to take a dip in the Indian Ocean after dinner and a question from local security, "Are you in the CIA?" after we took a picture of a local dog. In addition, we had a surprise run in with students from the University of Minnesota Engineers Without Borders Uganda team at the airport as our group had the same flight to Amsterdam.
