Wind turbines at Vestas and Siemens

Today we got to explore two wind turbine plants and learned a lot about wind power. Unfortunately, I was prohibited from taking pictures at either of locations.

First we drove to Vestas, a global energy company dedicated solely to producing wind energy. We were allowed to see the production of the nacelle (which is where the generator and gearbox are housed) and the blades.

After a quick stop for lunch, we drove an hour and a half to the Siemens wind plant. It is one of the biggest engineering and electronics companies in the world.

The Siemens wind turbine plant in Denmark produces some of the biggest windmills out there. Siemens is ranked number one in the world for offshore wind power and is in the top 10 for land wind turbines.

The company is extremely efficient at making these turbines. For example, wind turbines that generate 2.5 MW of power are made from 4,000 individual components and take about 15 hours to make.

Look for an extremely exciting update tomorrow (with awesome pictures), as we are traveling to the LEGOLAND of Denmark!
