Day 8: Water design presentations and new outfits!

Hamjambo, everyone! Today was Tuesday, Jan. 13. We woke up bright and early to the beautiful sound of roosters in the morning. The students then ate a delightful breakfast prepared by our favorite chef, Harrison. After breakfast, the eager-to-learn students continued to work on the water designs for our respective villages.

The weather was less than ideal for the entirety of the morning, as it rained for what seemed like forever! Don’t worry though, when lunch time came along, we battled the elements and made the walk in the rain to either Hasty Tasty or Neemas. The students clothing all got very wet.

After lunch, we proceeded to give presentations to the students and teachers about the villages we visited and the problems which we were trying to solve. All three presentations were well done and presented perfectly. Good job everybody!

After everyone presented, we finally got to see our custom-made Tanzanian outfits! As we walked into the shop, we all got a glimpse of the bright colors and patterns of the suits, shirts, skirts, pants, dresses, and jumpsuits. As we tried on our outfits, many of the students ran into some difficulties which required tailoring.

Some of the men found that they could not raise their arms over their heads, but they did think they looked jacked. The women had issues with tight fitting shirts that because they were made out of a stiff material, couldn’t stretch over their shoulders. Luckily, the tailor was happy to make changes at no extra charge for the issues that were pressing. The men however, went home with their purchases and looked pretty dang good.

When we returned to the Lutheran Center, we had some downtime which was used to do laundry, sleep, and bond with each other. We then went to Mama Iringa’s for some excellent pizza. Don’t worry—we made sure to order more spicy Italian pizzas after the positive feedback from the students.

After a touching speech from our fearless leader Paul, the students retired to the courtyard for some beverages and more bonding. Finally, we went back to the Lutheran Center (aka The Homestead) for some riveting games of Hearts.
