Saturday, May 18, was our first full day in Munich. The day started with a delicious German breakfast of bread, sliced meat, cheese, and some fruit. After breakfast, we were free to spend the day as we wished.
A group of five of us hiked over to the English Garden in Munich and traveled along the fast-flowing stream. Along the way, we stopped and enjoyed a rugby match that was being played in the park. Further ahead in the garden was a small lake full of paddle boats.
Next on our list of activities was the BMW Museum. To get across town, we hopped on the subway and the station we exited was right beside the modern museum. The attractions were split into two buildings.
One contained exhibits on each part of the car design process, including clay modeling, aerodynamics, and weight reduction. This building also held vehicles and engines from throughout BMW’s extensive history.

One design that really struck me as innovative and bold was the 1988 Z1, which has doors that instead of swinging open, collapse into the body of the car. Clearly the design did not catch on, but I love the attempt and revitalizing something so seemingly simple such as a car door.
After the museum, our group headed to an Irish pub near downtown Munich in order to watch Bayern Munich FC play the last game of the German season. The bar was underground and was so packed that you could barely move. The enthusiasm of the fans was immense and entire crowd roared every time the ball went in the back of the net during the six-goal thriller. Because of the win, the team was crowned champions of Germany once again!
